2026 SMC Pay Rates: The VA Checks That Pay More Than 100%

At 100%, VA disability pays $3,938.58 a month, tax-free. That's the number most veterans know. But there's a whole second pay scale most veterans have never heard of — Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) — and it pays more. A lot more. The top SMC rate is $11,271.67 a month.
Whether you served four years or twenty-four, combat arms or support — these rates apply the same. If your situation matches one of these levels, you should know about it.
What SMC actually is
SMC is a higher rate of compensation VA pays when your service-connected situation meets specific criteria set by law (38 U.S.C. § 1114) — things like loss of use of limbs, blindness, needing daily help with basic needs, or being housebound. It's not a bonus on top of your rating. When VA grants SMC, the SMC rate replaces your regular compensation rate. The one big exception is SMC-K, which does stack on top. Like regular compensation, SMC rates reset every year with COLA.

SMC-S (housebound): the two ways in
$4,408.53 a month. Both paths start the same way: one service-connected condition rated at 100%. From there, you qualify if you have additional separate disabilities combining to 60% or more — or if you're substantially confined to your home and immediate premises because of service-connected disability. VA assigns the level based on your rating decision; you don't apply for a letter, you claim the underlying conditions and VA is supposed to consider SMC. Keyword: supposed to.
SMC-L: aid and attendance
$4,900.83 a month. SMC-L covers several severe situations: amputation or loss-of-use combinations, blindness, being permanently bedridden — and needing daily help with basic needs like bathing, dressing, and eating. If a spouse or family member helps you with daily life every day, this level may have your name on it. This is the level most people mean when they say "aid and attendance" in the SMC context.
SMC-K: the add-on that stacks
$139.87 a month per award — and this one is different. VA adds SMC-K to your regular compensation at any rating: 10%, 50%, 70%, 100%, wherever you are. It covers specific losses: a hand or foot, both buttocks, a creative organ, blindness in one eye (light perception only), complete deafness in both ears, loss of voice, and a few others. You can receive 1 to 3 SMC-K awards, and they stack on every SMC level except O, Q, and R.
How SMC works with your rating
When VA grants SMC, the SMC rate replaces your regular compensation — you don't get both. (SMC-K is the exception; it adds on.) That means going from 100% ($3,938.58) to SMC-S ($4,408.53) is a raise of about $470 a month, tax-free. Dependents can raise SMC-L and above further. Want to see what your current rating pays? How to find out if you qualify
Read your rating decision line by line. VA is required to consider SMC when the evidence supports it, but it gets missed — the VA won't call to tell you a level has your name on it. If your situation matches one of these levels and your decision doesn't mention SMC, talk to an accredited Veterans Service Organization (VSO) — like the DAV, American Legion, or VFW. Their help is free, and it's the right kind of help. We don't do claims assistance here; this page is education so you know what to ask about.
